Attitude is everything. Check your ego at the door and don’t come off as a know-it-all. You have to find a healthy balance between having confidence in yourself and a “child-like” wonder. Get curious about other’s experiences and views.
Get good at assessing others and developing a radar for finding potential candidates. When trying to snag a GOOD mentor they need to be a good fit. Look for people who have something you desire and for those that are different from you in important ways that will stretch your awareness, skills, and network.
Take a second to isolate where you're looking to grow. You have to know this before you can even begin to understand who could be a great fit for your need. How can they help if you haven't identified what you'd like to work on?
Be proactive by setting clear goals for working together before you approach the mentor candidate. Draw up an action plan. Understand your landscape! This will help you navigate your initial conversation and making a great first impression!
You have to give to get, so be ready to both give and receive! The relationship benefits should be reciprocal. There are things of value you can offer a mentor.
