STOP SELLING YOURSELF SHORT... JUST APPLY FOR THE JOB!

Why is it that most people, especially women, don’t feel confident enough to apply for a job until they’ve checked off each item on the qualification list? Well many sell themselves short, reasoning that they are wasting the employer‘s or recruiter’s time in applying for a role in which they didn’t meet every “required” skill. Realistically, you will not be 100 percent qualified for every job you apply for. Although you should meet the minimum qualifications, if you do not possess every single desired skill, it doesn’t count you out as a potential candidate immediately! Here’s some reasons why?

(1) It’s not all about the hard skills! Other things can strengthen your marketability such as soft skills, networking and recommendations. Let the recruiter or employer make the decision of whether or not they should further connect... don’t make it for them.

(2) There is no such thing as a perfect candidate. Experienced recruiters know this. Job descriptions are more like wishlist versus “set-in-stone” requirements. It’s what the recruit team or interview panel feels the ideal candidate should possess. It’s important to note, at times, the candidate that looks the best on paper may not be the best fit for the opportunity. So take that chance. Submit that app! At least give yourself the opportunity to be considered.

(3) Don’t underestimate the power of confidence and enthusiasm. Both of these traits radiate from within you. Recruiters can sense your level of confidence and enthusiasm, even in just reading the words you type into the online application. So focus on your transferable skills and not what you don’t have. Speak to your ability to learn new things quickly, take initiative, and pursue additional education that compliments or helps build upon your current skill set. Use words that demonstrate your genuine enthusiasm for the organization and their mission.

In closing, keep in mind, the hiring manager or recruiter is not always exactly sure of what they are looking for. He or she is simply putting out a description that they think will work, casting the widest net, in hopes of attracting the most “qualified” candidates. If you meet at least 60% of the desired skills listed in the job posting, just go for it! What’s going to happen to you... they tell you “no”. That’s fine! BUTTT what if they say “YES”! You won’t know until you try.
