The Art of War... In the Workplace

Isn’t the workplace like a battlefield? You often find yourself fighting... fighting for recognition, fighting for that next opportunity, fighting for respect, or fighting for a voice. And when you don’t find yourself fighting for these things, there is always workplace conflict with peers lurking in the shadows. Face it; work environments can at times feel like a war zone!

What can we learn about battle from Sun Tzu; the author of “The Art of War”?

(1) Strategize! Tzu says, “Victorious warriors win first and then go to war”. In the workplace, you must have a plan first if you want to drive active progress. If not, it’s so easy to get distracted and lose sight of goals amidst conflict.

(2) Compromise. He states, “The greatest victory is that which requires no battle.” Don’t let toxic team members drain your energy. Not every fight is worth the hassle. Learn to pick your battles. Knowing your priorities can help you figure out when it’s important to fight for something, and when you need to compromise.

(3) Confidence. He states “You have to believe in yourself.” Note that “you” are the most important element. If “you” play to your strengths, confidence can improve both your work performance and the quality of opportunities that come your way!
